Social, Ethical, and Legal Issues

Universal Impact:

Genetically modified crops has affected society globally. Through G.M. crops, food production will increased and as a result, the price of food will lower significantly. Since world hunger has been an issue due to the cost and lack of production of crops, genetically modified crops can significantly become the solution to the issue to the issue. With genetically modified crops, underdeveloped countries and regions will be able to obtain the amount of food needed to feed the poverty and the children that lack nutrients. It is crucial that we support genetically modified crops for they help supply all regions of the world as its population continues to grow exponentially. G.M. crops also effect the world economically through the innovation of biotechnology. (1)

Human Health:

With new innovations there are risks that come with it. In terms of genetically modified crops, there is a potential risk of allergies. This is caused through the possibility of allergenic genes being inserted into food substances that do not originally induce the genes' respective allergic reactions causing people to become outrage. People fear that genetically modified crops can one day cause lethal effects on highly sensitive individuals. Though there are concerns of the risks, there is no real evidence that G.M. crops can cause allergenic reactions. Due to the growing concern of the risks, anti-GM activists have started campaigns and protests for the labeling of G.M. crops. (2)

Environmental Risks:

Crops are genetically engineered to contain a substance that is toxic to the targeted organism. Through cross pollination there is a potential danger that the toxic substance tended for a specific crop's pest will be transferred to a different crop. The trans-gene can potentially escape into other surroundings and cross pollinate with weed plants, which result in the weed plants containing herbicide-resistant genes making them resistant to herbicides which would compromise current weed control methods. There has also been a study in 1999, at Cornell University where scientisits had concluded that the pollen from the Bt corn could harm the unintended organisms, like the Monarch butterflies but were actually aimed at the European corn borer. Another complication that comes with cross pollinating G.M. crops is the potential loss in biodiversity. Biodiversity is the range of organisms living in an ecosystem. Biodiversity could potentially be threatened if G.M. crops cross pollinates with a non-GM plant; as a result, the G.M. crop’s gene would be dominate causing there to be more genetically modified crops. And since genetically modified crops are designed to be more suitable for the surroundings, they would out compete other species of crops which will eventually lead to their complete eradication from the ecosystem. An extreme risk of the lack of biodiversity, also meaning the lack of variety of genes in crops, could result in many plant outbreaks. (3)

Legal Regulations:

The United States Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA, regulates the consumption of genetically modified crops as well as doing the testing on the genetically modified crops before allowing them to become on the market. "FDA's priority is to ensure that all foods, including those derived from GE plants, are safe and otherwise in compliance with the FD&C Act and applicable regulations." Generally the FDA considers G.M. crops to be safe for consumption. (4)

The United States Department of Agriculture or known as the USDA regulates the importation, interstate movement, or environmental release of certain genetically modified crops. All genetically engineered crops must be authorized by the USDA. As well as regulating G.M. crops they also monitor the effects that are upon humans. (5)

 

the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the use of pesticidal substances. Bioengineered crops may contain pesticidal substances that is the subject to be reviewed by the EPA. The EPA monitors the effects the crops have on the environment as well as ensuring that biopesticides do not have any long term effect on the environment. (6)
